Quilting the table runner............................ from Exuberant Color

Finally I tackled the machine quilting on the table runner made with Marcia Derse fabric.  I ditch quilted the four crazy pieced blocks and the seam where the borders were sewn on.

There is usually one large print that is offered with each of her lines of fabric.  I had just a half yard of this one and it makes an interesting backing.  I need to put a couple lines of quilting in the borders and then trim and do the binding.

It got up to 80 degrees yesterday and was still 68 degrees at bedtime.  One quick storm came ...

12 blocks and sewing columns.................... from Exuberant Color

The last 6 blocks have been pressed and trimmed and have joined the first six on the design wall.  I have several thoughts about these blocks.  First I thought they would be nice sewn together like this as the center of a medallion quilt. But then, the  more I looked at it, I wondered how they would look with sashing between them and a wide border all around.  I removed them as stacked columns so I could use the design wall for my other project.

I went down to the basement, looked one last time at the layout of this ...

More blocks and a layout................ from Exuberant Color

I finished the 5 blocks I showed in progress yesterday and added them to the one left over from the table runner.

Last night I didn't have anything else lined up to sew, so I made 6 more blocks.  I will get them pressed and trimmed today and add them to the other 6.  They will all finish at 8".

While I was in the basement doing laundry I decided i needed to get the Marcia Derse fabric blocks up on the design wall.  I was a little disappointed with the result.  There were 2 blocks left over.

I ...

My choice.................................. from Exuberant Color

My choice for the sashing and borders was the busy print.  Surprised?  I love busy quilts.  The binding will cover the outer edge so the borders won't look quite as wide when it is finished.  I'm not sure what color will go on the back but I'm thinking a red binding might be nice.  I ended up just using 4 blocks instead of all 5.  I didn't want to piece the long border strips.  It is 43" long.

I was going to sort and bag all of the rest of the scraps, but they told me ...

A little sewing.................... from Exuberant Color

I added some pieces to the partially assembled crazy pieced blocks, pressed and trimmed them.  This will be a long table runner with the blocks measuring 8": 5 x 8" = 40", and that is before adding sashing or borders.

I tried this Marcia Derse fabric as a possible choice for sashing and border. With both light and dark strips on the outside edges of the blocks it becomes trickier to choose the fabric.

I also sewed the six half blocks for the 'other 16 patch' quilt, 2 of each that are shown.  I need to press them and then I ...

Pressing, cutting, sewing.............. from Exuberant Color

I decided to take the larger pieces of Marcia Derse scraps out of the project boxes and cut 3" finished triangles out of them.  I pressed all of the strips and the other things piled on the ironing table.

Last night I sorted the triangles into piles of the same fabric.  I'll do lots more cutting before I decide a use for these.

I sewed these 3 stratas which will become half blocks for the 'other 16 patch' quilt.

After pressing the blocks I made on Monday night, I trimmed them to 8.5".

Yesterday afternoon I remembered there ...

Sewing on two................ from Exuberant Color

There was a large pile to press yesterday, including these 4 Marcia Derse fabrics for the last 2 blocks.  I will get them cut today.  I also pressed all of the finished blocks that were in the test layout yesterday.

I pressed the 14 stratas from the day before and got them cut into 2 columns.  Later in the afternoon I sewed them into blocks, so they are ready to press now.

I had 2 hours of TV to watch and nothing set up to sew, so I grabbed a box of Marcia Derse fabric scraps and started making crazy ...

Trimming.................. from Exuberant Color

It was time to clean off a couple table tops yesterday so I didn't get to the studio until evening.  First up was trimming the Marcia Derse crazy pieced blocks.

The largest size I could trim to was 11.5".

They will be made into a table runner and this is the white with black Marcia Derse fabric that will border them.  I have a visitor coming today and PT tomorrow but there will be several hours to continue doing clean up and to work on this table runner.  I'm ready for a couple relaxing days.

Last minute November finishes and more...................... from Exuberant Color

There is nothing better than an all day sewing day.  It was too cold to go anywhere.

This top is finally finished other than a little trimming of the bottom edge.  It ended up at 49.5" x 71".  There are 2 Martha Negley fabrics in it and the rest are all Kaffe Fassett Collective.

I determined a final layout and got this flannel baby quilt top sewn together too.  When I was putting the blocks up on the  design wall, I realized the bottom left block was shorter than the rest.  Evidently 2 of the light strips were 1 ...

Third quilt top for October............. from Exuberant Color

I got the piano key border sewn onto the African fabric quilt top, cutting off the excess of each strip as I got to the end.  I don't think it shows much that some strips are narrower than others.  The side borders are 1/2 inch narrower than the top and bottom borders.  It ended up at 52" x 69".  I will use a dark binding on it, maybe the same fabric as the next to last border.

Before lunch yesterday I cut all of the green tomatoes off the last 2 plants and put them in a box ...

Border strips and auditioning positions........... from Exuberant Color

All 4 border strips are sewn oversized so there will be some trimming when they are sewn onto the quilt top.  I wasn't sure if I was going to flip the top and bottom borders end for end but I think they look OK the way they are.

I went out and harvested the green tomatoes late yesterday afternoon.  I threw away anything smaller than a golf ball.  The Rutgers and Big Boy tomatoes are a good size but have been green for so long.  I hope they will ripen.  I had good luck last year with them ripening ...

A crooked trial layout..................... from Exuberant Color

I put this quilt top on the design wall at a level that I could reach above it to put a border up there.  That meant bending over to add the border audition to the bottom so it is quite crooked.  I think I will need 13 Geese blocks so with the new batch I sewed I have enough for a top and bottom border.

A new book arrived yesterday, a gift from my daughter.  I might spend some quality time with it today.

More strips and more.............. from Exuberant Color

There are 6 more pairs of strips in this photo (added to yesterday's 12 pairs) and some more of the mottled strips waiting for a partner.  I'm up to 18 pairs, 36 blocks.  There are 11 more mottled strips.  I have decided to make 2 quilts so there will be 2 blocks alike from each pair of strips and the duplicate strips will go in the other quilt.  Here is another African fabric 16 patch quilt top I made in 2020.  I used Kona cotton solids in it and had some blocks of a large print in it ...

Still quilting.............. from Exuberant Color

I'm still quilting...9 blocks quilted, 6 to go, 3 small ones and 3 large ones.  I'll look for binding fabric this morning.

Tami at Thrift Shop Commando showed her Christmas pin collection.  That prompted me to pull out my mother's pin, also called a brooch on ebay.  I found it at 2 sites, one selling it for $54 and the other selling for $64.

The name Hollycraft is on the back of the trunk.

I need to pin this onto something this year.

We had a big temperature drop late yesterday and it is going to ...

Two layouts.................. from Exuberant Color

I made 7 more blocks to go with one of the sample blocks and put these up on the design wall overlapped so the strips line up like they do on the Tapas pattern.

What I really wanted to see though was the 8 blocks in the alternate layout that I came up with.  I have 14 more stratas to sew in addition to the duplicates of the 7 new blocks.  One strata makes 2 blocks.  If I use this second layout I need to make 2 additional stratas.

I have had this wallhanging basted and ready to quilt on ...

All over the place............... from Exuberant Color

I have too many days where I wander all over and do a little on a lot of things.  It doesn't feel like progress somehow.

I chose a batik backing for this crazy pieced wallhanging.  I needed a little under 1.5 yards and looked for a yellow but didn't find enough yardage on any piece.  Second choice was a black and white and this very early 1990s Hoffman batik is perfect.  It is one that isn't easy to use in a lot of patterns and there was plenty for a back with almost 2 yards still ...

Flannel quilt trimmed.............. from Exuberant Color

I got the pointy side edges of this flannel quilt top trimmed and did the staystitching around the edge.  I have a large piece of dark red flannel that a friend gifted to me so I think that will be the backing.  The top measures 71" x 90" before quilting.  The tumblers are 9".

The pressing and backing seam were completed yesterday afternoon and I loaded it on the longarm.  Then I added the batting and the Seed Packet quilt top.  This post shows the whole quilt top.  I did vertical straight line quilting with the channel locks to keep ...

Getting a quilt top finished.......... from Exuberant Color

I finally cut an assortment of lengths off the 2" yellow batik strips and pieced borders.  I got them all sewn on but haven't pressed it yet.  This is somewhere near 36" x 46".

I also cut 2 lengths for a backing for an older quilt top and spritzed the creases. Today I'll press the fabric and get it sewn together and load it on the longarm.

Late yesterday afternoon I baked some Amish Friendship bread, top view of one loaf here.  This loaf is for a granddaughter.  I ate some of the other loaf; someone had to ...

Final layout sewn........... from Exuberant Color

I moved the top small block section down in the right column from the photo yesterday.  I was happy with the layout now and sewed it all together.

Next on my list was to make a sample block with the pickle dish die.  There are little tiny notches to match every single piece when sewing the outside arc and inside melon piece to the arcs.  That is what sold me on it and I waited for a good sale to buy it.  I haven't decided what fabrics to use in a quilt yet but I think I will have ...

Last block in place............ from Exuberant Color

I had one more block that was too small so I added strips until I could trim it to 10.5" and now all of the blocks are made.  I can't see that this one would become any better by adding a lot more blocks.  It is only 30" x 40" so it will get a border of some kind.  After I decide whether I want to rearrange the column on the right I just need to sew this together and then it will move over to the side of the design wall for awhile.

The Amaryllis was so ...
